Overview of National Qualifications

The diagram below shows the two main qualification packages – technician and senior technician – and the areas of specialisation that can be completed as endorsements.

Note: you must complete at least one specialist area and the core to complete a qualification at either level.

Basic development principals:

• Skills and knowledge that are elective at one level are compulsory at the next level up.
• Entry requirements for qualifications and their components (unit standards) have been kept as open as possible.
• Test options have been included within unit standards to ensure everybody can complete the relevant requirements of their specialist area/s.
• Technicians in laboratories that specialise in a field of testing should be able to achieve a qualification endorsement (called a strand); likewise people in laboratories which cover a wide range of tests should be able to achieve endorsements across a range of areas.
